Install Windows 10 without a Product Key – Here's how it works
Do you want to test Windows 10 before purchasing a license key? Then you can install the operating system without a Product Key and activate it later.
1. Download the Media Creation Tool
First, download the Microsoft Media Creation Tool. With this tool, you can:
- Upgrade to Windows 10 directly
- Download an ISO file
- Create a bootable USB stick
Then start the Media Creation Tool. You can either accept the suggested settings or adjust them to your desired version of Windows 10.
2. Create installation media
For the installation, you will need:
- A USB stick with at least 8 GB of storage (recommended) or
- A blank DVD
Create your installation media with the Media Creation Tool.
3. Install Windows 10
Restart your computer and boot from the USB stick or DVD.
The Windows installation will start automatically.
Then select:
- Language
- Time and currency format
- Keyboard layout
and continue with the installation.
If prompted to enter a Product Key, click on:
“I don't have a Product Key”
Then select the desired edition of Windows 10.
If you want to completely reinstall Windows, select the installation type:
“Custom”
Then select the target drive and start the installation.
4. Activate Windows 10 later
After a successful installation, you can activate Windows at any time with a valid product key.
To do this, open:
Settings → Update & Security → Activation
Then click on:
“Change Product Key”
Enter the purchased product key and click on:
“Activate Windows”
Done
Your Windows 10 has been successfully installed and can be activated at any time with a valid license key.
