Troubleshooting activation issues

ESET products may display various ACT error codes (e.g., ACT.0, ACT.7, ACT.3, ACT.21, etc.view complete list of ACT errors) when activation is unsuccessful. Follow these steps to resolve these errors:

1. Completely remove previous antivirus programs

Uninstall any previously installed antivirus solutions – preferably using the official removal tool from the respective manufacturer.
An overview of removal tools for third-party antivirus programs can be found here.

2. Check internet connection

Ensure that your internet connection is active. To do this, visit the ESET website. Without an active connection, neither updates nor activations can be performed.

1. Open ESET product

Open your installed ESET program.
(How do I open my ESET product?)

2. Open advanced settings

Press the F5 key to open the advanced settings.

3. Clear update cache

Navigate to:

Update → General → Clear update cache → Delete → OK

  • If the Delete button is grayed out, restart your computer and try again.

  • If the error persists, proceed to step 6.

7. Check hosts file

Navigate to:

C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\

Open the hosts file there (e.g., with Notepad).

Check if there are entries indicating a manipulated DNS redirect to the domain edf.eset.com.

  • If such entries are present, delete them manually.

  • You will need administrator rights to edit.
