How do I exit Windows S mode?

Important Information:
Exiting Windows S mode is permanent. It is not possible to return to S mode after deactivation.


Exiting S mode: Windows 10

Step 1

Open the Settings of Windows 10 via the Start menu.

Then navigate to:

Update & Security → Activation

Step 2

Click on:

“Switch to Windows 10 Home” or “Switch to Windows 10 Pro”

on “Go to the Store”.

Warning: If the section “Upgrade for your Windows version” is displayed, do not select the option “Go to the Store” there.

Step 3

In the Microsoft Store, you will find the entry:

“Turning off S mode”

Click on “Get” to permanently exit S mode.

Exiting S mode: Windows 11

Step 1

Open the Settings of Windows 11.

Navigate to:

System → Activation

Step 2

Open the “S mode” section.

Then click on “Open Store”.

Step 3

The page to deactivate S mode will be displayed in the Microsoft Store.

Select “Download” or “Get” to complete the process.

If the page does not open automatically, manually search for:

“Turning off S mode”

and then click on “Get”.

After the switch

After exiting S mode, you can install programs and applications outside of the Microsoft Store as well.

Please note that this process is permanent and cannot be undone.
